Anti-Racist Practice: Allyship (Virtual Training)

Allyship is an active, consistent, and ongoing practice in which a person holding systemic power seeks to end oppression in solidarity with a group of people who are systemically disempowered. This training will explore what it means to be an ally against racism in a Human Services profession.

After attending this training, participants will be able to:

Understand the definition of privilege and what it means to have multiple identities
Value the importance of being an ally to individuals who are disadvantaged due to race/ethnicity in order to create a just and equitable society
Understand what it means to be an ally
Learn what it takes to fulfill the duties allyship requires and develop a plan for action

Carl Rabun

Carl Rabun, Ph.D., has more than 20 years of experience working in government agencies and 10 years managing teams in public and private sector organizations. He served as an employment services case manager, unit supervisor and Employment Zone workshop facilitator at the Kern County Department of Human Services before spending the past 15 years training state and county human services employees and managers as an instructor/consultant for UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education (CPE) and Sacramento State University College of Continuing Education. His areas of expertise include employee motivation, communication skills, personality and generational dynamics, cultural empathy, conflict resolution, performance management, team dynamics, strength-based coaching and goal setting. Rabun received the 2020 Outstanding Service Award from UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education.

Ebony Chambers

Ebony Chambers has provided youth and family services for over 15 years and brings both professional and personal life experiences to her work. As a mother who has worked through and navigated multiple systems with her own child, she brings that experience to her work and provides the oversight of advocacy and support to families in the greater Sacramento and Yolo County communities. Prior to her role as director of Family and Youth Partnership at Stanford Youth Solutions, she worked as an administrator for residential care for youth. She is actively involved in the community, serving as the co-chair of the UC Davis Parent Partner Advisory Committee, a member of the Mental Health Services Act Steering Committee and other community initiatives.
