Trauma and Youth in the Juvenile Justice System

Youth involved with the juvenile justice system often have been exposed to early trauma or to traumatic events. It is key to understand how these symptoms and trauma-reactive behavior effects their everyday interaction and decision making. Youth reacting to trauma are more vulnerable to a mental health diagnosis. Understanding trauma reactions can guide work with youth and family, and help inform you when building plans and determining placements.

Topics will include:

  • Research on the prevalence of trauma and factors leading to lifelong impact
  • The behaviors associated with trauma exposure
  • Implication for practice
  • Assessment and resources available

Participants in this class will understand the impact trauma can have on daily living skills and how to incorporate the information into planning.
