Human Trafficking: Building Awareness in California

Human trafficking is an emerging and growing threat to California and its citizenry. All available data continues to indicate California leads the nation in the number tips and leads. In 2018, Californians originated 1,336 tips to the National Human Trafficking hotline – almost equaling 2nd, 3rd and 4th place states combined. Proper training required to be able to identify and report potential trafficking is limited or not an option. This course addressed this training gap.

Participants will:

  • Discuss how and why human trafficking occurs and why California is an attractive target for traffickers
  • Legally define human trafficking and examine the type and form of trafficking that is most evident in California
  • Discuss the scope of the problem in the United States
  • Discuss what a victim-centered approach is and how it is being applied here in California
  • Better Understand the law enforcement structure and intelligence gathering network combatting human trafficking in California
  • Develop skills to identify potential indicators of human trafficking
  • Analyze Human Trafficking case scenarios for suspicious activity
  • Identify available resources for further education
