Growing Yourself, Growing Others: Engaging and Empowering Those We Serve

Over the years, Human Services has evolved in its approach when serving families. Rather than helping our clients by simply solving barriers for them, we are now empowering our clients by providing them with the right tools to solve their own barriers. This interactive training builds upon one’s own knowledge and skills needed to engage and empower clients through meaningful interactions. Designed as a 4-part sequential learning, this training series introduces specialized interventions to develop, reinforce and support the Human Services professional in today’s world. We will learn to grow ourselves to, in turn, grow others.

Part 1 – Trauma-Informed Engagement and Implicit Bias

The first component focuses on applying trauma-informed theories during the interview process and recognizing how one’s own implicit bias may be impeding initial and ongoing engagement. We will:

  • Define trauma, as well as understand the impact of trauma from childhood and the affects it has on behaviors as adults
  • Employ tips and techniques to best respond and serve those who have experienced trauma
  • Recognize stressors and personal trauma triggers in our roles as Helping Professionals
  • Learn the difference between implicit versus explicit bias and the implications in in Human Services

Part 2 - Empowerment and Emotional Intelligence:

The second component concentrates on identifying one’s own strengths and opportunities for growth in emotional intelligence, building rapport, and empowering one’s self and others. We will:

  • Identify and apply personal empowerment strategies
  • Model personal empowerment and other tools to empower others
  • Learn to build rapport initially and continue to maintain rapport through the life of the case
  • Recognize one’s own emotional intelligence, strengths, and opportunities for growth

Part 3 - Growth Mindset, Strength-Focused Engagement and Effective Communication:

The third component supports with developing effective communication skills through DiSC styles, verbal, non-verbal, and virtual communication (including via phone) while practicing strength-based communication strategies (including developing a growth mindset). We will:

  • Learn how to develop a growth mindset versus being stuck in a fixed mindset
  • Utilize strength-based and solution-focused participant motivational language and strategies
  • Identify and adapt to different communication styles and non-verbal cues during in person, phone, and virtual interactions
  • Understand DiSC styles for self-identification of communication styles and learn to communicate with people most effectively with different DiSC styles

Part 4 - Conflict Management, Crucial Conversations and Coaching:

The final component addresses conflict management recognition and techniques, as well as application of the GROW coaching model principles to empower clients in their decision-making and self-motivation journeys. We will:

  • Learn to have crucial conversations by recognizing conflict management preferences
  • Utilize crucial conversation techniques
  • Apply the GROW model principles when coaching participants towards self-empowerment
  • Apply transfer of learning through activities
