Supervisor Development Series 1 & 2

About the Program

The Supervisor Development Series (SDS) 1 & 2 provide supervisors with opportunities to become skilled in leading change, fostering collaborations, implementing results-oriented decisions and leading people.  The continuous quality improvement leadership framework used in this series is based on the principles of adaptive leadership and the multi-dimensional skills that human services leaders at all levels need to promote the well-being of the workforce, serve as effective agents of change and facilitate positive outcomes for all individuals and families served by human services agencies and programs.

About the Framework

The Leadership Competency Framework provides a model to develop, guide and evaluate leadership. The term “leadership” can sometimes feel ambiguous, so the Leadership Competency Framework breaks it down into competencies that collectively represent leadership knowledge and skills. Human Ssrvices supervisors can use the competencies to:

  • Identify areas for individual development
  • Assess performance
  • Provide coaching
  • Infuse principles into programs

At the center of the model lies the leader’s ability to engage in self-reflective practice in several areas as articulated in the fundamental competencies. Quadrants depict each major aspect of leadership: Leading Change; Leading in Context; Leading for Results; and Leading People. The Framework acknowledges and even expects that individual leaders will have both strengths and challenges among the competencies within each quadrant. It is important that leaders recognize these, as well as those within their team, to leverage the organization’s collective strengths to better serve individuals and families.
